What Are The Rhetorical Devices Used In The Jim Valvano Speech
Jim Valvano is a legend in the sports community for his coaching ability as well as his unmatched perseverance. Valvano fought many battles on the basketball court, but none were as challenging as his battle with cancer. His perseverance earned him the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the first ever ESPY’s where he delivered one of the greatest and most inspirational speeches of all time. There are examples of all three of the rhetorical devices in this speech, but it is clear that pathos stands out the most amongst all of them. This was a very emotional speech that ultimately resulted in the unveiling of his brand new cancer research foundation, The Jimmy V Foundation.

The writer of the speech is the contemporary southernmost states vice president, Alexander Stephens. He was a lawyer and politician from Georgia. The topic of the speech is slavery and its advantages and natural distribution. Mainly he speaks to the Southern States of America, because the South at that time was the centre of slaves. But on the other hand it can be discussed whether he is talking to the entire country, because he trying to justify his actions and stances, as well as he also wants to enhance the advantages and natural intention of separation and hierarchy.

1.The tone of McKim’s address was confident and passionate. His tone was filled with confidence and passion because he held no hesitation in his statement and he said what he truly felt about the aftermath of the Civil War. “There is in our hearts a double loyalty today: a loyalty to the present and a loyalty to the dear, dead past.” , this statement shows confidence because he spoke out what he thought his comrades felt about the change from Confederate to Union with no hesitation. He also shows passion in this statement by clearly stating his loyalty to a defeated belief.

The philosophy that herotic American and destructive enemies was solely developed by the method of ethos and pathos. Ethos help viewers understand the idea of the ideal, herotic, and perfect American through war propagandas. On the other hand, pathos play with viewers emotion to prove and demonstrate the idea of evil enemies. A company philosophy and persuasion causes viewers to have a bias opinion. Knowing a company philosophy will help the viewer to make less of a biased opinion on an idea or product.

The Waco Siege In 1993, Waco, Texas was the site of a siege held by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and the F.B.I. against the Branch Davidian religious group. This group was seen as a cult that posed a danger to society. The group, led by David Koresh, was an apocalyptic based religion (Lacayo and Bonfante). They lived together on a compound in Waco and met their fate on April 19, 1993 when the fifty-one day siege ended with the compound in flames.
