Throughout The Maltese Falcon, Dashiell Hammett uses gender and sexuality as a reflection of power and strength. Throughout the text, Hammett introduces three main male characters and three main female characters. The main character, Sam Spade is introduced to us at the beginning of the novel; “Samuel Spade's jaw was long and bony, his chin a jutting v under the more flexible v of his mouth. His nostrils curved back to make another, smaller, v. […] He looked rather pleasantly like a blond Satan” (Hammett, 3).
In comparison to the movie, the play undermines male dominance by focusing on women’s efforts to solve their own problems. First of all, there aren’t even men in the cast of the play,
Masculinity. It can be argued that no one word has undergone such a dramatic shift during the past century, as masculinity. In many ways J.D. Salinger’s groundbreaking novel, “The Catcher in the Rye”, and its main protagonist, Holden Caulfield, were both ahead of their time as they realized masculinity could not have a uniform definition. The reader is led on a journey by Holden, from fancy prep schools to the tough streets of New York City, all in the search for one thing: the meaning of masculinity. Holden’s search for identity culminates in his failure to conform to societal standards of masculinity, allowing Salinger to effectively question the need for such strict standards which seemingly only inhibit personal growth.
Despite the movie’s dramatic rendition of real-life events and ideas in regards to women in crime, it gets the point across by using Roxie and Velma’s femininity win the “innocent” verdict. Although it only displayed a one-sided and underdeveloped prohibitionist argument, it was still factual in its portrayal, and the prohibition movement is vital to her case. The final topic, women empowerment, had the most authentic yet subtle portrayal from the symbolism of the puppet in “They Both Reached For the Gun” to the setting if Chicago. The Releaser in the Rye The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, was published in 1951 and swiftly became a classic. The novel is notably known for its first person account of a teenage boy named Holden Caulfield, who navigates his way through the difficulties of youth in the 1940s. Throughout the novel, Holden grapples with many societal expectations, and one of the most prominent is masculinity. Holden is pressured to reach a standard of masculinity that he does not believe in due to the pressure from various male role models, his peers, and even himself.
In Angela Carter’s “The Company of Wolves” the wolves are perceived as dangerous and aggressive creatures posing threat to humans. In small villages, the children are given weapons just to protect themselves from the evil wolves. However, in Angela Carter’s story, a male can turn into a wolf. This undermines the binary oppositions for Carter’s story. Aaron Devor states in “Gender Roles Behaviors and Attitudes”, how the females are dependent and how the males are independent and much more aggressive.
Throughout history the existence of patriarchy has threatened women’s rights to equality and self-determination. Patriarchy manifested itself in the marriage practices of early modern European society and became the foundation on which couples built their love and partnership. During the sixteenth century, literature describing ideal wives and husbands was a popular genre, but works about female gender roles were more prevalent. The Bride, a poem published by Samuel Rowland’s in 1617 details the duties of a good wife and life partner.1 The duties listed in Rowland’s poem were very common for women at that time and can also be seen in Steven Ozment’s book, Magdalena and Balthasar. Although much of the novel seems to support the patriarchy, there are moments in the text that are ideologically conflicted. These are times when Holden seems to recognize the workings of the patriarchy in the world around him. At one point in the novel he recognizes that a woman's worth is determined by her appearance: “Real ugly girls have it tough. I feel so sorry for them sometimes. Sometimes I cannot even look at them...”
This role has diminished through the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, but the need to be masculine remains in countless men. Makeup, tights, and ballet shoes are not considered manly. Therefore, a subsequent stereotype has become prevalent. Persistently, people erroneously believe all danseurs to be gay, weak, and feminine. Frequently, male dancers are left to feel inadequate and are discouraged from their art because their manliness is questioned.

People have stereotypes that go along with judging through age class, for example, adults stereotype judging teenagers as persistently staring at their phones all day, rarely interacting with anyone face to face. The play King Lear by William Shakespeare is an ultimate in tragic downfall as it depicts an old King and his vassal's children deceive them and remove them from their political positions, as well as their positions as fathers. Throughout the play, Lear and the Duke of Gloucester become less and less important, due to their children's fight for power. As a result of this diminishing importance, both men experience a crippling of their masculinity. Lear asks his daughters, Regan, Goneril, and Cordelia to express their love for him, ”Which of you shall we say both love us most," (Shakespeare, I, i, 56). After he says this, his daughters Regan and Goneril confess to him all their love, telling him that no one will ever have their love like their father does.
Misery: Challenging Gender Stereotype Misery is the most thematically satisfying of all Stephen King’s novels. The theme this paper will explore further is that of King’s disturbing interpretation of gender roles. Gender stereotypes are what is thought of as societal norms dictating types of behaviour based on whether a person is a male or female. In popular literature gender stereotypes often see women as good, pure and innocent, whereas men are seen as strong and at times the evil beings, most often being the villain.
Although being written centuries apart, the limited expectations of women presented in ‘Othello’ and ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ differ little from each other. The female characters are confined by society’s expectations of male dominance, female purity and virginity, and the many passive roles of women. Despite the differing legalities surrounding the position of women between the centuries in which the plays were written, both plays explore the impact of how societal conventions confine women and the ways they must comply to be safe in a patriarchal society. The behaviours and treatments of Desdemona, Blanche and Stella illustrate the attitudes enforced on and the behaviours of women throughout both periods in time and it is these attitudes and behaviours that impact the plays to the greatest extent. When characters in either plays defy their norms, or demonstrate a lack of compliance they induce negative consequences, such as the murder of Desdemona and the institutionalisation of Blanche.
For Shakespeare’s plays to contain enduring ideas, it must illustrate concepts that still remain relevant today, in modern society. Shakespeare utilises his tragic play Othello, to make an important social commentary on the common gender stereotypes. During early modern England, Shakespeare had to comply to the strict social expectations where women were viewed as tools, platonic and mellow, and where men were displayed as masculine, powerful, tempered, violent and manipulative. As distinct as this context is to the 21st century, the play exposes how women were victimised by the men who hold primary power in the community in which they compelled women to conform to the ideal world of a perfect wife or confront an appalling destiny for challenging the system. Moreover, Shakespeare utilises the main antagonist, Iago, to portray how men are desperate to achieve what they want and to indirectly fulfil the stereotype of masculinity and power through manipulation.
In William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the female characters' desire to question the law of Athens and select their own husbands drives most of the conflict in the play. In a way, Hermia, Helena, and Titania are the protagonists of the play because each of their desires are being thwarted by the patriarchal structure of the society in which they live. The way the women try to overcome such hurdles does not sit well with the men. Accordingly, the men get on edge when their patriarchy is disrupted, so they make strict laws to try and keep the women under their control.
