Maintaining Control Chapter Seven: Patriarchy, Politics, and Government describes an America that is very similar to England, on the other side of the Atlantic, especially in Virginia, and an America that is starting to resemble an early United States. This committee was necessary as our schools have gone through rapid growth in a world that is constantly changing. I was asked to join as a student member of this committee, and jumped on board without hesitation, remembering all the good that the schools had done for me. In 1966, Betty Friedman wrote “The National Organization for Women’s 1966 Statement of Purpose”, a statement calling for “A more equitable division of labor within the family” (Foner 296-297) and arguing that despite the number of college educated women increasing, women were still relegated to the role of housewife and mother. In Betty Friedman’s statement, Friedman says that “true freedom” means having equal opportunity and freedom to choose between being a homemaker and holding a position in social, political, and/or economic life. Friedman’s idea of freedom is different from Ronald Reagan’s who, in his Inaugural Address, claims that freedom in the United States means choosing to limiting the power of the government and focusing on self-rule instead. While Friedman and President Reagan both argue that having freedom in the United States means having the freedom to choose, Friedman and Reagan have different views on the idea of freedom. During my high school career, I attended Presentation Academy in Louisville, Kentucky. This is an all-female college preparatory school located downtown. The school considered itself an advocate for social justice and a provider of proper cultural capital, a set of knowledge, perspective, norms, and language styles shared by a group, for a successful future in the diverse community (Class Notes 10/18/17). Through analysis of Presentation Academy’s demographic background and curriculum opportunities, I recognize that the school’s stratification could hinder some students success; however, the level I was placed in during my time there provided me with the benefits of the stratification.
The Cult of True Womanhood in “The Yellow Wallpaper” In her essay “The Cult of True Womanhood: 1820-1860”, Barbara Welter discusses the expected roles and characteristics that women were supposed to exhibit in accordance with the extreme patriarchy of the nineteenth-century America. The unnamed narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper” is seen to conform and ultimately suffer from this patriarchal construct that Welter labels the Cult of True Womanhood. The narrator falls victim to this life of captivity by exhibiting several of the fundamental characteristics that Welter claims define what a woman was told she ought to be.
In the introduction “Come Closer to Feminism” Hooks describes the conversations she tends to have with people who are interested in what she does. The misconception that feminism is hatred towards men by women is one that is constant according to her. As she explains most men and even women have the idea that feminist hate men, that they are all lesbians and they take jobs away from white men to make their lives harder, but when asked what they have read or know of feminism most will answer saying that they have never read a book. A Thousand Splendid Suns’ was written by an Afghan American writer, Khaled Hosseini. The novel narrates the strength and resilience of two women who endure physical and psychological cruelty in an anti-feminist society. It also demonstrates how The Taliban uses fear and violence to control the people of Afghanistan, particularly females. Throughout this story the novel exposes the way customs and laws endorse Rasheed’s violent misogyny and it tells the tale of two women who endure a marriage to a ruthless and brutal man, whose behaviour forces them to kill him. The protagonist Mariam is a poor villager who lives in a remote area in Afghanistan, in contrast to Laila who is a smart, educated daughter of a schoolteacher.
First, we should define feminism. Basically, feminism is a philosophy that advocates equal rights for women and men. The more feminists seek to overthrow any sign of male dominance in our society, to the point where they disapprove the biblical roles of husbands and wives, defending abortion, and so on. Modern feminism is a forged solution to the real issue of the inequality of women. Feminism assumes to itself the right to demand respect and equality in every aspect of life.
