Paul and Farouk have something to hide, but each keeps their secret for different reasons. First, Farouk was hiding his identity because Sang did not know any friends or family relating to him. Also, he never wanted to spend time with her housemate as the author says, “ He never said hello or good bye; instead, he behaved as if Sang was the sole occupant of the house. They never sat in the living room, or in the kitchen” (186). That clears show how he does not want to be known. Even he did not drive her home. So, it seems like he is hiding something. Though, Farouk knew how a keep the secret, making Sang do many things for him, so that Sang thought that his life wouldn’t function without her. However, Farouk was hiding the relationship with Deirdre who did not know that Sang and Farouk were dating. Farouk lied to Sang saying that Deirdre was just a friend from college as well. On the other hand, Paul did not tell the truth about that he failed in the exam. It seems like Paul was a shame to say that he did not pass the exam after Sang says that “ she was impressed with how far he’d got on his PhD” (181). Moreover, Sang mentions that Paul was a devoted and he will be good at [writing paper]. So, we can see how Farouk and Paul have something to hide from Sang. However, Paul differs from Farouk in the way that Paul lied. Paul lied because he wants to maintain the image that Sang has of him about be smart, devoted, and competitive. In addition, Paul does not hurt the Sang’s feelings as Farouk does. Farouk lied because he has two different lives. For that reason he stays far away from Sang’s friends and family. Therefore, they hide something from Sang, but each one keeps their secret for different
