How do you define a serial killer? According to the FBI handbook it’s a person who has killed on at least three separate occasions, with a break in between the murders. They are usually derived from the compulsion and lack of self-control that developed due to a troubled upbringing or a mental disorder of sorts. Often there is also a sexual element to the acts, and in between the acts they usually act quite normal. When they first met she was infatuated with Paul, who was at first the dream guy for her. He was revealing sexual fantasies to her and she was very compliant with all of them at the beginning. No other girl Paul had previously seduced had been as willingly deviant as Karla. She would do anything to keep Paul interested in her. The couple got engaged two years after seeing each other. The most twisted of his fantasies was that he wanted to bring a young girl into their relationship. Karla stated that she refused at first. But when Paul started to lose interest she consented to Paul’s demands. Paul revealed that the girl in which he wanted to bring into the relationship was Karla’s younger sister who was the 15 year old Tammy Homolka. From information gathered he was known to have an insatiable desire for defiling virgins, and he asked Karla to “give” him her younger sister’s virginity for Christmas. She used a series of drugs including a tranquilizer to put her to sleep and Halothane stolen from the veterinary hospital of which she worked to keep her asleep. Tammy vomited, suffocated and died. Paul Bernardo was going to get the full weight of most if not all the charges, and the best result that could be realistically hoped for instead of first degree murder perhaps a guilty verdict on second-degree murder,. It wasn’t much, but for good reason, no one wanted to give Paul Bernardo much; he might have the chance at a life outside of prison with second-degree murder convictions. Someday.
