Have you ever wanted to follow your dreams but didn’t know how?The Alchemist by Paul Coelho tells the reader a story of a young Andalusian shepherd who follows his dreams in search of treasure across a desert. Coelho teaches us the wisdom of our hearts, to read omens in life, and above all to follow your dreams. A heart is a part of your body but it is where the soul is housed. The heart is synonymous with intuition it knows what to do because of where it came from. In the book Santiago was learning yet at a loss with his heart. “Listen your heart. It knows all things, because it came from the Soul of the World, and it will one day return there. ” (Coelho 129). Santiago didn’t want to go on his personal legend anymore because he had found Fatimah and he didn’t want to leave her even though she would wait. “So, we their hearts, speak more and more softly. We never stop speaking out, but we begin to hope that our words won’t be heard: we don’t want people to suffer because they don’t follow their hearts”( Coelho 133) In this quote Coelho shows how your heart wants you to be happy even if you aren’t doing the right thing. Santiago dreamt about the pyramids twice but still went to the gypsy lady for confirmation. “You came so you could learn about your dreams” (Coelho 14). When she learned about his dreams she knew he already knew that he had to go to the pyramids he just needed confirmation. He then decided to go on a journey to the pyramids. He got robbed of all his money. “He wept because God was unfair and because this was the way God repaid those who believed in their dreams” (Coelho 41). He starts to doubt in his dreams because he is so upset. This is a really bad idea because he was only experiencing part of his personal legend where he had a misfortune him not believing will just cause more misfortune. After that he had to get a job and he went to a crystal merchant the merchant taught him a lot about omens and how you should accept other peoples dreams. “That day, the merchant gave the boy permission to build the display. Not everyone can see his dreams come true in the same way” (Coelho 57). the merchant knew that the boy was a problem solver and this this case may be very helpful he had to let the boy fulfill his dream of making the case. He eventually reaches the pyramids and learns that it is back in the hills of Andalusia.
