From the beginning, Paul makes it known that he is unhappy with his mediocre life on Cordelia Street. Whenever “he turned into Cordelia Street he felt the waters close above his head.” (Cathers 94) Because of his unhappiness back home, he makes risky decisions such as stealing money from the company he works for and fleeing to New York City. When he arrived in New York, Paul bought himself a gun because he foresaw that he might need “a way out”. When Paul’s affair exploded in the Pittsburgh papers, he showed no regard to his father paying the firm for what he had stolen or that his father set out to go find him.

First, there is sensitization and awareness when an individual begins to either feel or have homosexual desires but they are not well understood. She cannot be defined by just one label, but both. She is a mother to Pearl, who is a child born from adultery. She is a caregiver, seamstress, a lover, and a counselor, but the Puritanical society Hester lives in constantly reminds her that she is just a whore. By subscribing to this label, Hester loses her identity in a way. The effect of being an outsider due to the letter causes her to become a shell of her former self.
The concept of motherhood is the unifying factor between these two characters' situations. Continuing the mother/child symbolism mentioned before, Hester's motherhood was what brought about her ultimate shame with the child being conceived in sin. It was the most unconventional beginning to her situation, as seen in her retorts to the pleas of her daughter: "I shall think of it, and come occasionally to the scaffold [a cruel thing to leave her daughter looking for her at her execution], and when it is over, the child is yours - for it's a male, and mine shall be thine. You do little good by coming, and the last was harm, old woman. Why, it may be only this world's mode of mother's tenderness, and must not be withstood.
Being independent wasn't something that Paul was able to experience, with being the oldest child out of three came with a plenty of responsibilities. In school Paul was considered a golden child he had excellent grades and was respectful of his teachers, he was well liked
Paul cannot control his behavioral outburst, and releases all his rage on the rocking horse. Paul becomes emotionally unstable, and lashes out at his mother when she catches him riding the rocking horse. The reason Paul acts this way is due to his inability to control his hyperactivity. Paul’s mental deformities are confirmation that his mother consumed alcohol while pregnant. Furthermore, Paul’s rocking horse symbolizes his delayed development due to fetal alcohol syndrome.
One of the largest factors that fueled her guilt was watching her daughter, Pearl, grow up. She must raise her little girl and teach her not to sin, all while knowing, deep down, that she herself has committed the greatest sin of all. Furthermore, Hester must constantly evade inquiries from Pearl about her father and about the substantial symbol that her mother wears on her bosom each day. To the Governor, she exclaims, “‘Here is a child of three years old, and she cannot tell who made her! Without question, she is equally in the dark as to her soul, its present depravity, and future destiny!’”
Also, the story ends with some casting of the first stone and Jackson (1948) prefers to leave the gruesome details to the reader’s imagination. Nevertheless, in The Rocking-Horse Winner story, after Paul’s mother learns where her money comes from, the boy claims to be lucky, but sadly he died soon afterward. Oscar tells his sister “My God, Hester, you’re eighty-odd thousand to the good and a poor devil of a son to the bad. But, poor devil, poor devil, he’s best gone out of a life where he rides his rocking-horse to find a winner.”
mother. Paul wanted that his mother could celebrate her birthday diligently and dignity by having all facilities leaving aside past deprivation. He managed handsome money indirectly through lawyer in the name of some unknown relative who deposited this money on the condition to pay Paul mother at the time of her birthday in instalments. His mother received a letter from lawyer and when she approached lawyer, she insisted to receive whole money at a time that was one thousand pounds. This showed that Hester thought of only herself and she wanted to get all the money at once on the proclamation that she had to pay back her debts but instead of paying her debts, she spent all money in extravagant.
A cupidity of Paul’s mother. She forgets her most important role as a mother, cause she is cupidity it make Paul dead untimely. Paul is a boy and he is the main character of The Rocking Horse Winner. In this story, Paul is a boy who can do everything for his mother’s love. He is in a family that his mother believes in luck all the time.
