This helps the audience apprehend how he’s portraying his meaning through his own writing style, which includes theoretical irony, satire, and use of persuasion. The idea of overcompensating in kindness when talking to someone has always existed in society, from the beginning of time. It was once a matter of life or death and has now turned into a matter of satisfaction and contentment, in our everyday lives. This idea has become a topic of conversation once the new millennium began. A very known professor named Steven Pinker wrote his opinion on this matter in an excerpt, “Words Don't Mean What They Mean” from, “The Stuff of Thought”. He argues that the societal need for over sophistication when in conversation has caused a trend of indirect speech making a person's true intent difficult to understand, which was achieved through his use of well known allusion and diction.

In his essay, “How to Say Nothing in 500 Words” Professor Paul Roberts gives many suggestions on how to be a better writer and hook readers into what you are saying. Paul Roberts starts with writing how most students begin their paper, wanting to put it off and dreading a 500 words minimum. As a result, the paper is having what everyone else has written, with no excellent detail and same content. His first suggestion is “avoid the obvious content.”
Maybe it is possible to learn how to say something within these 500 words after reading Paul Roberts’ essay, “How to Say Nothing in 500 Words”. In this reading you can tell Roberts’ has some very strong points, but also some that don’t make sense and I could argue such as obvious content. Before reading this essay, I didn’t realize how limp my words were and how I seemed to be lying to myself about how awful of a writer I was. Hopefully, after reading this essay, the nothingness of my essays become something vivid and attention grabbing. Lastly, personal comparisons can make a reader learn from their mistakes by using the information given in the text. All Roberts wants to do is better any writers willing to seriously try, and by following the steps in “How to Say Nothing in 500 Words,” the task becomes much simpler. I have already grown so much from just reading what he has to offer.
