Everything is Not What it Seems Paul Revere is a well known American hero known for warning the colonists about the British’s arrival. But is he the “hero” that everybody seems to know? When analyzing two texts, you can see the major differences in perspective that people have.
When analyzing Revere’s letter to his friend Jeremy Belknap you are able to identify that he was a very courageous individual. “About 10 o'clock, Dr. Warren sent for me to come quickly. He begged me to set off immediately for Lexington.” Evidently, Dr. Warren must think that Revere was brave. They probably thought Revere could complete the task Warren needed to do considering he called for Revere instead of another one of the men in the committee. He was also a dedicated patriot who would go very far and risk his life for his country. “Every time we met, every person swore on the Bible that we would not tell anyone about our activities.” (Paul Revere's Letter to Jeremy Belknap, 1798 Paragraph three, sentence three.) “Meanwhile, impatient to mount and ride,; Booted and spurred, with a heavy stride; On the opposite shore walked Paul Revere;…Now gazed the landscape far and near;…” (Paul Revere's Ride by Henry Longfellow) This quote gives the reader the “larger than life” effect. It makes Revere seem heroic and immortal, as if he should be a character on a children’s TV program. “So through the night rode Paul Revere;…And the midnight-message of Paul Revere.” (Paul Revere's Ride by Henry Longfellow). These lines from the poem show that Revere doesn’t give much credit to any of his partners. According to the poem, Paul Revere is a larger than life
