Many powerful writings in history has been written by people imprisoned for some reasons. It is so obvious that one will get bored in a single small room and staring at the walls almost 24 hours in a day. Many writers who have been imprisoned take a martyr’s stand against whatever system is oppressing them. Paul in his letter to the people of Philippi rather focused on a Christ-centered life by encouraging the people to do same. The book of Philippians was written by Paul and Timothy and the recipient of this letter was the Church at Philippi. The church at Philippi was founded by Paul. Chapter 1 of the book of Philippians begins with a greeting and a prayer. Paul opens with a prayer of thanksgiving and encouraging the people to live together in love, knowledge and depth of insight. Chapter 1 of Philippians is a personal and affectionate letter because Paul shows gratitude to the people of Philippi for their prayers and financial support for the ministry. “Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel” (Philippians 1:12, NIV). Paul encourages believers in Philippi to continue preaching and spreading the word of God because through his persecution and of others it is rather attracting people to proclaim the gospel without fear. It encourages us be like-minded and in one in spirit. Paul in chapter 2 of the book of Philippians provide us an example on how to follow the example of Christ who humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of even death. He sacrificed His life so that we will be set free. Paul advises us to live in unity, humility and selflessness. Paul encourages believers in Philippi to spread the word of God without grumbling or complaining. “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky” (Philippians 2:14-15, NIV). Paul encourages them to shine like stars in the universe emphasizing them to be different from others. He also said they should be cheerful until the day the Lord will appear. Chapter 2 ends with Paul saying good things about Timothy and Epaphroditus who he is sending to take care and help the believers in Philippi. He talks about how Paul and Epaphroditus have sacrificed so much for the works of
