"Pay to Play"
Participating on a sports team is an extremely important event for many high schoolers across America. Sports have almost become a lifestyle for many students across the country. Unfortunately the United States economy remains in a substandard position and cannot afford to give schools enough funding to cover all athletics. With this problem at hand, many schools have had to start requiring a "pay to play" policy in which the student athlete pays the school a certain amount in order to play for the team. Pay to play is necessary because it would allow schools to stay in restraints of their budgets with ease, students who cannot afford the payment are available to an exemption from it, and playing time would not be affected.
If high schools implemented a pay to play system for sports their budget would be much more manageable. Schools have been given much smaller budgets for sports compared to years in the past. Haverhill High School in Massachusetts had previously received $550,000 compared to the $300,000 they receive now (Cerling & Herman, "2007"). With the absence of such a large amount of money Haverhill had no choice but to initiate a pay to play system. Many people believe that if a student pays to participate in a sport they should receive the same amount of playing time as others. That is untrue and completely irrelevant to the pay to play system. The pay to play system only allows a student to participate on the team, not be given guaranteed playing time. It is specifically written that students will not be given equal playing time and that they 're paying to be on the team at (school) (Cerling & Herman, "2007") and it should be this way at every school that utilizes this
