Diary of a United States of America soldier stationed in Pearl Harbor December 7th, 1941 Sunday 10:00 Dear Diary, Today was a very eventful day, I woke up at 7:49 am to the alarming noise of incoming Japanese navy jets. The attack struck us soldiers like a sudden, ferocious storm that appeared without warning. Within three minutes, I was looking into the sky with around 200 attacking planes overhead. What seemed to be the first 20 minutes was complete chaos and I questioned if I was going to survive with other soldiers going down around every couple seconds, and bombs and bullets raining onto the vessels below. Soon after, the second wave of the ambush had ended, giving me a moment of disbelief in what had just occurred. For what seemed like the next hour or two, the soldiers that survived walked around cleaning up the countless amounts of lost soldiers. I am writing this while lying in my bed, unaware, as well as frightened about what is to come following this attack. I would do anything to see my family, because within the near future I'm going to be somewhere in the world fighting, and my chances at survival are probably not great. I knew the relationship between us and the Japanese was tangled for a while, but I did not expect anything like this to happen. Why did this happen to us? Why did the Japanese choose to attack Hawaii? I’ve just found out that the attack killed 2,403 service members, wounded 1,178, sank or destroyed six U.S. ships, as well as destroyed 169 U.S. Navy and Army Air Corps planes. Every single U.S. battleship in Pearl Harbor has sustained significant damage, and caused mass destruction everywhere I look.
