In the essay "We're Safer Post 9/11" written by Eric Holder, Janet Napolitano, and James Clapper, a very intelligent, well descriptive work is published based on the days after the tragic 9/11 event. We all know that 9/11 was a very sad day and it destroyed the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Shanksville, Pa. The writers gave great examples as to how the United States has increased the safety of our country. We have took down most of the people and groups affiliated with the 9/11 attack and that is a great achievement accomplished. The attempt of proving how we have increased our safety was well expressed.

The use of rhetoric in the ad can play a major role in the ads success. As well as identifying the colors in the ad and there meaning, it can help to understand the persuasion used in the ad.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s speech on the bombing of Pearl Harbor is a significant part of our history. Utilizing several rhetorical devices, he evokes the emotions of congress and the citizens of the United States. His use of the rhetorical devices affirms the severity of the drastic situation. Three primary rhetorical devices used in his speech are denotation, anaphora, and repetition. Roosevelt uses the word “infamy” at the beginning of his speech to grab the attention of his audience.
On the mournful day of December 8th, 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a speech to the nation informing them about the tragic attack by the empire of Japan on Pearl Harbor. The attacked occurred on the previous day before his speech, and he knew no matter what he had to say to the nation, it wouldn’t help. By waiting a day, he hoped it would have a greater impact on the people as a whole. Compared to other very popular speeches throughout history, this one is fairly short, but gets directly to the point. By doing this, he believed it would make everyone more engaged while also having more of a dramatic effect.

Our 25th president, William McKinley, was assassinated and died a painful death. He was shot, at an event that was held to congratulate America for winning the Spanish American War, by Leon Czolgosz, but died eight days later from the wound causing gangrene. He die on September 14, 1901. President William McKinley’s assassination was unjustified because he was a caring man, and he was forgiving; however, some people thought he was a bad president because of what he did. There wasn’t any single definite event that caused the attack on Pearl Harbor, but rather a list of situations, events, and mentalities. In Japanese schools, students were taught that they stemmed from the Yamato race, which they deemed to be superior. They saw America and Europe as nations who’ve ruled for a long time and were falling apart, and off their pedestal:“an old order… is now crumbling. ”(Document A) This was their chance for their superiority to “...extend[ed] so as to embrace the whole world.”

Roosevelt did not have to say he was serious to be serious; he was serious and that emotion spread across all audiences. In conclusion from both events of Pearl Harbor and 9/11, we have learned that we still stood strong as a nation. We never gave up and never will. Both presidents during each event gave a very respectable speech. We can see from each speech that there were different vibes. Roosevelt believed in our arm forces would get the job done.
