For years now, I have been looking at pursuing a career in nursing. Over these years I concluded that I would like to specialize in pediatric nursing with my bachelors of science in Nursing. These specific types of nurses specialize in the care of children for 0 months to late teens. While also engaging in tasks such as performing exams, measuring vital signs, taking blood pressure and urine samples, and ordering needed tests. According to the Texas board of nursing (n.d.) “Each nurse reactivating an inactive or delinquent license must also submit verification of 20 contact hours completed in the two years prior to reactivation, or have a current approved national nursing certification”. There are also specific certifications that pediatric nurses will need depending on where they work. Almost all nurses with need the basic life support (BLS) which involves being CPR certified, knowing how to use a defibrillator and how to react to choking. The pediatric advanced life support certification (PALS) is needed for most pediatric nurses who work in hospitals or ERs, also the neonatal resuscitation (NPR) might be needed for somebody who will be working in pediatrics or neonatal units. Thirdly, with every job comes the advantages and disadvantages. I believe the advantages to becoming a nurse are getting to take care of children and helping aid in their recovery. There are also many opportunities for job changes right now I want to be a pediatric nurse, but I can change to many different specialties. These advantages are some of the reason I’m drawn to a career in pediatric nursing. Shift work is an advantage and a disadvantage while nurses in hospitals typically work 3 days on 4 days off, but the downfall is working holidays long
