Personal Statement
My interest to specialize in pediatric nursing started as a high school student when I volunteered at a local pediatric rehabilitation center. It was there that I learned more about healthcare and the aspects that drive it forward. Not only does one incorporate the knowledge obtained from education into practice, but successful practice also integrates a nurturing and enabling environment. At the rehabilitation center, I was able to work with children who suffered from Down syndrome, torticollis, muscular dystrophy, and delays caused by premature birth – just to name a few. Volunteering here gave me an opportunity to experience direct patient care, which inspired me to pursue nursing as a career. Through this experience, I was not only able to see the differences that occurred week-by-week in the lives of these pediatric patients, but also in the lives of their parents. Nursing is a profession not only known to uphold integrity and demonstrate compassion, but it also entails a great responsibility and accountability to caring for the life of another. It is a privilege that conjoins my abilities of providing excellent care to my love for this specific field of medicine. Nursing to me is not just another reliable income, but a profession that satisfies and sustains my desire of helping others. Whether it was through a volunteer opportunity, clinical rotation, or even my experiences through working as a nurse’s aide followed by work as a nurse technician, I have always been reminded that no matter how difficult a patient may present, I am helping them in a time in which they are most vulnerable. It is this particular aspect that drives my attention towards becoming the best I can
