First and foremost, the nursing student is one of the key stakeholders in relation to this project. Without the public becoming interested in nursing and enrolling in the program, there would be no nursing school or need for peer mentoring. It is the student that may reap the most appreciable benefits from a peer-to-peer mentoring program, once choosing to become a nurse. As Colvin & Ashman (2010) point out, peers have a much greater influence on each other than most would think, and it is pivotal to capture this relationship in an effort to increase academic success rates. The success of a peer-to-peer mentorship program ultimately falls in the hands of each student.
I led twenty-two students during their first year of college to provide them success as students. I co-taught a class that focused on study skills, UNK resources, and involvement on campus. My ability to communicate and adapt to the diversity of the class was shown through creating different learning activities to employ in the classroom. I exemplified team work by collaborating with another instructor. Through my experience as a Peer Academic Leader, I was able to hold two counseling sessions with each student per semester to provide myself as a resource.
The mentors purpose is to be a support system for the students outside of the administration. First generation students are new to what 's going on around and campus, and are known to being a part of Student Support Services is like being at home with family
After three quarters and over six months, I was able to go to an in depth interview with the teacher of the classroom that I peer tutor. Mr. Kanna the U.S. History teacher for juniors, has been working with me in order to help spread the knowledge further for the entire class. My role in the class is to help out the students in the classroom on any questions they have for U.S. History. Over the months, I have gotten into a routine, in which I help anyone who has a question for the home/classwork or to connect an event/person of the past to today or to be there for moral support in the class. I have personally take great joy in helping out the students in any way possible.
Mentees should be comfortable being vulnerable around their mentors and should expect genuine responses from them. One of the most significant qualities a peer mentor should have is ambition. Students are often more inspired by other students who are driven and who have some degree of knowledge as to what they want to do in their future rather than not. Life is full of many experiences. These moments in life are shared with so many people, including, friends, family, and sometimes even a mentor. By definition, a mentor is “an experienced and trusted advisor”, but a mentor is much more than that. To me, a mentor is a person that you can look up too. It is not necessarily someone you want to be exactly like, but they inspire you to do great things.
In the course of the year, due to the Peer Leadership program, I feel much more motivated. At the beginning, I was insecure and unable to carry out the responsibilities successfully. Many times I found myself out of place and expressing myself was a challenge since I did not feel confident. But I have been able to feel part of a group for the first time in a class at school. I can share with other peers and unwind more easily in front of them and out of class as well.
Why do you believe you are a good fit for the Peer Mentor position? I enjoy helping people be more like themselves. I feel indebted to the University of Saint Francis for helping me grow and live the life that lives inside of me, and I would like to give back that feeling of self-awareness to others. I have positive energy, good communication skills, and a growth mindset. I work well one-on-one and in a team setting.
A mentor in nursing is defined as someone who can facilitate learning, supervise and asses nursing students in a practice setting. This in turn produces efficient and effective students who become competent and will have mastered the craft and art of caring. Mentorship is significant to students as it helps students develop their professional identities, attributes and competence and also enables students to learn through the creation of the supportive working and learning environment as an individual (Clutterbuck 2004). Decisions taken by mentors in assessing students have significant impacts on securing the nursing workforce in the future. This is because they help safeguard the ongoing excellence in the delivery of personalized patient care while making a major contribution to the development of the nursing profession.

If there was something I was unaware of I had no problem researching it primarily due to our problem base learning. Within the first day of my clinical rotation I was exposed to wound care. Something we have not yet covered within the program.
