Their critical coming of age lesson can be seen in the children’s experiences with Mrs. Dubose, an angry, insulting woman who is later revealed as a courageous figure that battles her morphine addiction by her own means. In the Sequel to the Hunger Games, Catching Fire, written by Suzanne Collins, about 6 months after returning home from their unexpected victory of the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark discover they must partake in a Victor's Tour and visit each district. Through the tour Katniss and Peeta sense rebellion stirring amongst the districts. This makes President Snow feel the need to prove that he is still very much in control and spreads the word about a cruel new change that will occur in the upcoming 75th annual Hunger Games. Snow then turns Katniss and Peeta's world upside by throwing them back into the arena of the games and makes it clear that there will only be one winner in this go round. So after a colossal meltdown
Katniss is very poor which makes training for the Hunger Games very difficult for her. Unlike her opponents in other districts who train their whole lives for the Games. However, overall she proves to the city and district that she is a tragic hero through her self-sacrifice that led to victory. In the book “Hunger Games book 2:Catching fire”, after winning the 74th annual Hunger Games because after the rules of the games were changed so that there could only be one winner instead of two so her and Peeta decided to both eat poison berries so that their would be no winner. But at the last second it is announced that they both won. President Snow was not amused by this rebellious act so before Katniss and Peeta go on the victory tour, six months after the games, where they visit all 12 districts through Panem and give speeches to each districts people, president Snow speaks with just Katniss in private and threatens that if she doesn't convince him and the rest of Panem that her and Peeta are madly in love there would be dire consequences
Human nature seems to be totally different in the next novel. In The Hunger Games, a male and female are selected out of twelve districts every year to participate in the games. The point of the game is to be placed in an inescapable battlefield and fight to the death. If a character wins the games you receive money, food, a house, and prestige. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are a part of the annual game.
Imagine being in a scenario where you could win money beyond your comprehension as long as you win a battle to the death against 23 other contestants. In The Hunger Games by Susan Collins, there is such a competition, an annual one at that. These competitions are called the “Hunger Games,” in which are a battle for riches at the risk of 24 contestants' lives, all contestants of varying ages and districts that they come from, there being 12 districts in total. There are two important characters from the same district, District 12; Katniss Everdeen, a girl that can hunt incredibly well, and whom also wields an absolutely burning hatred for the Capitol, and Peeta Mallark, a young baker’s boy who is naturally good willed and has nothing but kindness
The Hunger Games: Chapter Notes Chapter One: It was the morning of the reaping, Katniss was reflecting on the events of her life. This introduces the characters main family, prim, and her mother. In order to clear her mind, Katniss went hunting in the woods near the edge of District 12. While there, Katniss 's friend Gale showed up to I an escape plan before the reaping can began. Katniss declines the offer and heads to the square for the reaping.
One afternoon Shirley Jackson decided to write “The Lottery,” all in one day. Jackson sets up the story by describing specific details about the town and where they were gathering to form a twisted end. “The Lottery,” and “The Hunger Games,” seem to have quite a few similarities. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and The Lottery by Shirley Jackson both show how humans are drawn to violent traditions and the hypocrisy human’s possess towards violence. I do believe author Suzanne Collins was influenced by Jackson to create her novels.
The announcement said that there may be two winners of the Hunger Games if they are from the same district. This urged Katniss to find Peeta, as she's walking she sees a blood trail. As she follows the blood trail she hears a weak voice saying “Don’t step on me”. It was Peeta, Katniss nursed him back to health. She washed his wounds and wrapped his leg up.
At this point in the story, they have finally reached the surreal moment of winning the Hunger Games. In chapter twenty, page three hundred and forty five, the text states," '... Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark!' I give you---the tributes of District 12!' " Katniss's perseverance has paid off.
There are several themes in the book, each one has a significant meaning to the storyline. The first symbol that describes the theme of abuse of power is government control. The reason that they hold the Hunger Games is because it is a dystopian society and most of the districts are poor and the capitol likes it because it keeps them entertained just because they believe that they are superior to everyone else who lives outside the capitol. To explain this more into detail, the government controls all the districts and all the districts have to follow the rules or else there is a serious punishment.

The Hunger Games is set in in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic North America where the United States has collapsed and in its place a corrupt Capitol ruling over 12 Districts that gets poorer the higher the Districts go, District 12 being one of the poorest, you need to have good survival skills to be able to survive in one of these poor Districts. Some of the main characters are Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark which are both from District 12. After some of the Districts tried to rebel a long time ago the Capitol put the Games in, where two tributes (a boy and a girl, ages 12-18) get picked by lottery “Reaping” to kill each other in the Games for the Capitol’s entertainment.
Peeta Mellark, one of the main characters in the book The Hunger Games, once said, “ My nightmares are usually about losing you. But I am okay once I realise your here.” The novelis about two teens from each district in the country Panem being selected to be in the Hunger Games, a reality TV show that requires them to fight to the death. Over the course of the novel, the two main characters, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, develop romantic feelings for each other.
The Hunger Games and women in society: Suzanne Collins author of “The Hunger Games” designed Katniss Everdeen as the idealistic image of women in society. Her strength, skills, and self-control make her a figure of a woman perfect to match how our society wants women to be like and Suzanne wants that to stand out and make us think about it. Suzanne Collins wants to express how she thinks female should be like in everyday life and express that Katniss is much more than just a character, she is a message that is being sent to all the readers. Katniss breaks all the already established stereotypes by being able to survive, improvise and control herself in bad moments when even the toughest person would break apart. Katniss is strong since she was born she was being “tested”, she knows a wide variety of survival skills and her knowledge expands even more when she starts practicing for the hunger games.
