The theme statement of the story “Choices” is “Don’t fully trust someone who you are uncomfortable with, especially if you haven’t known them for long.” Well, this is what I’ve learned from this short story. The factors that have contributed to this tragedy (a car accident where Peggy was found to have more injuries than Ken) are based on the facts that they’re not only uncomfortable with each other, but also haven’t know each other for long. She should’ve trusted herself, especially after having the suspicion that he was hiding one of his disabilities that could affect his driving skills, and her safety (which it did). The line “What was happening, had he seen something, was he having a fit or a stroke?” shows her suspicion, from there she should’ve got off the car at once and had a talk with him. …show more content…

The fact that Peggy isn’t comfortable with Ken is represented through the statement “Peggy had only had a little while to make up her mind.” If she was really comfortable with being around him and really wanted to go, she would just enthusiastically agree since he was her ‘loving’ boyfriend. Instead, she was worried about not having enough time to think of a decision. Not only that, but they haven’t known each other for long either, this is stated as “Ken came close to her for the first time last summer.” This means that she probably does not fully understand, and know him as her lover. Also, knowing that he was untrustworthy, and still staying with him led to her
