In his autobiographical work (1), the legendary football player Pele describes a strange calmness that he felt on the field. “''It was a type of euphoria; I felt I could run all day without tiring, that I could dribble through any of their team or all of them, that I could almost pass through them physically”, he adds (p 51). His account is hardly exceptional. While the topic is still considered by many to be somewhat of a taboo (2), a number of athletes, musicians and ordinary people have spoken of to a similar feeling of almost supernatural tranquility and control of mind and body (3-5).
