Penile Cancer The penis is made up of three chambers of spongy tissue that contains smooth muscle, blood vessels, and nerves. The corpora cavernosa is two of the chambers that are on both sides of the upper part of the penis. The corpus spongiosum is below the corpora cavernosa and surrounds the urethra, the tube that urine and semen go through the body at an opening which is called the meatus. At the tip of the penis, the corpora cavernosa opens to form the head of the penis, or glans. Penile cancer is the most common in Asia, Africa and South America.
What is penile cancer? Penile cancer is when a normal cell changes and grows fast which makes a malignant tumor. Which means it’s cancerous and can be spread around the body. Penile cancer is rare and is mostly common in uncircumcised men. Men who are circumcised have a lower risk of getting penile cancer. There can also be discharge and blood or a foul smell or odor. Also there can be a change of color to the penis, unusual pain on the penis, swelling on the tip, or a rash. These can all be symptoms of cancer but they can also be symptoms of other things. If there are any of these symptoms happening you may want to go get it checked out before it gets worse or spreads.
There are many different causes of penile cancer some of them are HPV, age, smoking, having a weak immune system and many other things. Penile cancer is very rare. More than 1,000 people are diagnosed each year which isn’t too many people. It is uncommon for men under 40 to get penile cancer most cases are in men over 40. There are chemicals in cigarettes that cause cancer of the penis, researchers say it damages the DNA of cells in the penis and increase the risk of getting penis cancer. Having a weak immune system is also a cause because it’s hard for your body to fight off
