Today, many people think of Pensacola as an active metropolitan beach town that sits in the most western part of Florida’s panhandle. It is a town full of life and culture. Pensacola is a hub of entertainment, food, art, music, shops, and various other things; but it hasn’t always been this way. Pensacola is actually one of the most historic cities in all of Florida. It was a part of Spanish Florida and was the site for some historical and important events. The Battle of Pensacola occurred in 1814 and was a crucial win for Americans and their future placement in the War of 1812.

They wanted to keep what was theirs. Andrew Jackson’s purpose of winning the Battle of Horseshoe Bend on March 27, 1814 was to remove British control of northern Florida. The British had access of the Gulf of Mexico by having control of Pensacola. When the British arrived to Pensacola, they threatened the Spanish with the destruction of their settlements if they helped aid the Americans. The Spanish were bullied into submission. After the Battle of Horseshoe Bend ended, a thousand of wounded, sick, and hungry Red Stick Indians migrated to Pensacola seeking refuge. Had the Americans not won the Battle of Pensacola, they would have not been able to campaign successfully enough to win the Battle of New Orleans. Thanks to Andrew Jackson, the British had a disadvantage in the fact that they could no longer prepare for their invasions of New Orleans and Mobile. This ultimately made the win of the War of 1812 much easier for Americans. Andrew Jackson was a force to be reckoned with.
