It was the morning of August 4th, 1892 and the day was growing to be hot and humid. At 11 am Adelaide Churchill glanced out of her kitchen window and saw her neighbor, Lizzie Borden leaning on the screen of the Borden’s back door. Adelaide called out, concerned for her well-being, “Lizzie, what is the matter?” Lizzie called back to her with an upset expression, “Oh, Mrs. Churchill, please come over! Someone has killed Father!”
Through depictions of laws being broken and the truth being revealed, director Dholakia, conveys the heartache and fear experienced by the massive mob attacking against the Muslim families in Gujarat. In this film the Hindus attacked the Muslim. This wasn’t just for no reason though. The Hindus believed that the Muslim had something to do with the train fire that killed 59 Hindus. There is no solution on how the train caught on fire, but the Muslims were initially blamed for the deaths.
Conformity is present in every group situation with adolescents. Adolescents are always looking to be a part of a group, usually conforming to the standards of the group. Adolescents often conform because they want to have the approval of the peers that are well liked or “popular”. A great example of adolescents and conformity is in the chick flick ‘Mean Girls’ through the different cliques in high school and how it affects the peers themselves. Caty, the main character, is faced with several difficult situations where she decides to conform with her high school peers getting her in trouble that becomes hard for her to escape.
The movie Mean Girls is a perfect example of many social-psychological principles. Three of the major principles that are seen in the film include: conformity, in-groups and out-groups and prejudice. Cady Herron, a naïve sixteen-year-old who has been homeschooled her entire life, is forced to start as a junior at North Shore High School because of her family’s job relocation. Throughout the movie, you see Cady struggling to maintain acceptance in the school’s in-group known as The Plastics. The Plastics, who represent popularity, high economic status and the acclaimed standard of beauty, are one of the meanest cliques at North Shore.
Get Out is a horror film released earlier this year in February. The film centers on Chris Washington, a black man, and his white girlfriend, Rose Armitage. Rose invites Chris to a weekend trip to meet her parents. When meeting Chris, Rose’s parents are overly accommodating towards Chris and constantly speak about how much they love President Obama and other African-American people. Chris attributes this as awkward attempts to deal with their interracial relationship.
“Ex boyfriends are just like off limits to friends. I mean that’s just like the rule of feminism” (15:15). This famous saying said by Gretchen Wieners from Mean girls is widely known and most of the time ridiculed by people. Mean Girls is a movie that portrays the stereotypical American high school life. The movie has a main focus on the girls of high school, rather then on the boys.
The stereotypes applied to nineteenth century women were not just stereotypes, they were realities. Women were expected to stay home and do all the cooking and cleaning for their family. They were entirely dependent on their male counterparts for all their tasks outside the domestic sphere. They were generally considered unintellectual and uneducated. Women were generally suppressed in early society.
Other people stereotype me by saying I am “basic” I’m not really sure what that meant so I asked around and I got the answers to my questions. A “basic white girl” is someone who wears leggings, fake tans, ½ zip from pink, wears earrings, wears makeup, wears fake eyelashes, wears lipstick, wears uggs, and doesn’t follow sports, nor knows what a “sport” is. When I got told I was a basic white girl at first I did not think anything of it until I asked around and found out what the basic white girl is. After I found out I felt confused I wasn’t sure how to react to that but then I started thinking to myself and asked myself why people thought that
Youth culture can pertain to interests in styles, music, clothes and sports. It also pertains to behaviours, beliefs, and vocabulary; this refers to the ways that teenagers conduct their lives. The concept behind youth culture is that adolescents are a subculture with norms, morals, behaviours and values that differ from the main culture of older generations within society. For instance, young men and women, teenagers in this case, are mostly represented as unpredictable and not easy to understand. In the film, Mean Girls directed by Mark Waters (2004), adolescents are represented as bullies, who use manipulation to achieve what they want and are two-faced with the people around them; they are constantly stereotyped as a high social group like the plastics and a low social group like the mathletes; also they are presented as young people that fall under peer pressure, and are overly concerned about their appearance and about being socially accepted.
