Dōmo arigatō, Ms. Roboto: Perception, Presumptions and Personification of Personal AI Computational technology continues to grow at an exponential rate. Artificial Intelligence is one of the largest interdisciplinary fields within computation with many complex uses. As AI leaves the labs and is engineered for consumers into Personal AI it is shaped by society to fit the average user. In this paper I will explore how Personal AI's are framed using three design ideas: UI, UX, and UD. What is in common between your voicemail, GPS and the robo call/call center ? They are all communication technologies that most likely have a female voice. Personal AI's are similar. Companies build the interface to Personal AI's with the user in mind. When you interact with another person you talk. If you want an answer to a question you ask it. You can talk to Siri, Cortana and Alexa like you would your friend or, as discussed above, your secretary. To match this personification approach to PAI's they each have programmed personalities through comedy. Siri, Cortana and Alexa have a plethora of jokes that some users try to find by asking arbitrary questions. Cortana is a unique example of an PAI's since she originates from the Halo video game franchise. Her personification comes from the game and is carried over into the PAI. The voice interface used by Siri, Cortana and Alexa are what people think of when imagining an AI system. This comes from how AI is constructed in pop culture. Science Fiction, or Sci-Fi, is a popular genre of entertainment that uses scientific ideas to create fictional world. Halo is an example of a Sci-Fi game. In the Halo game we see the protagonist being guided by his AI, Cortana. As the game continues and the franchise grows, Cortana plays a larger role and becomes an integral part of the game. The personification of this AI illustrates to gamers what the future of AI might hold. It provides a futuristic understanding of what AI will be. So when Microsoft decided to join the AI trend it used Cortana from it's Halo franchise because people can already identify her. User's already understand what she does. Many other movies that use AI's …show more content…
Instead Google Now does what Google does but better. Google Now does not have a name, it does not to tell jokes, it does not concentrate on the voice. Google Now is designed more like an extension of their search interface. The public already understand how to Google things. Interestingly the word Google in the previous sentence is a valid verb that comes from Google's popularity. The engineers at Google took a different approach from Microsoft and Apple by realizing that the public that use their Google search already understand how to search so they extended the interface into voice. Google Now has also gone past voice completely with Google Now on Tap. With Google Now on Tap all you do is hold the home button or select a word and it will detect word of interest. Google Now uses a approach to build an interface that simplifies the existing the search to do most of the work for
