Throughout Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, Percy has to travel around the United States for the gods’ pleasure. This fantasy adventure also includes Grover, Percy’s only friend at his middle school, and Annabeth, an unlikely friend he meets at a very special camp. Percy Jackson doesn’t live a normal life, instead he is a bullied, middle school demigod. Not only does he get bullied, his teachers are the source of evil. Still not understanding the complete depth of his family, Carter sometimes can just not connect the facts:“‘Gnome?’ I [Carter] asked, as we followed him [Amos - a mysterious character] up the stairs,’Like those little runty guys?’ ‘Heavens, no,’ Amos said. I hate the gnomes. They smell horrible.’” (Riordan 52).This shows Riordans master sense of humor turning the Egyptian word for district/region into a modern and clever pun. One of the best points of humor in the book is the sibling banter that occurs at the start of every couple of chapters when the point of view switches between Sadie and Carter. For example, in Chapter 11, Sadie says: “Right, I’m taking the microphone. There is no chance Carter would tell this part properly, as it’s about Zia [another mysterious character]. Shut up Carter. You know, it’s true. ” (Riordan 130). This reminds me of a typical sibling rivalry I used to have with my own brother. We would constantly argue about placement in lines, what rides we would go on, and everything else.
