Percy’s Power Within Consultant Mary-Frances Winters, founder, and president of The Winters Group, once said, “The power within you is infinite. Plug into your higher self for a surge that will propel you to places you thought unattainable.” Although she was most likely not referring to The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, this quote can easily be related to the protagonist of the story, Percy Jackson. Percy may not have realized it initially, but he possessed incredible amounts of power and confidence to do awe-inspiring things. At the beginning of the story, if Percy would have realized he had powers inside, he would’ve used them. For example, Percy was faced with his first test when his pre-algebra teacher turned into a repulsive monster and attacked him. Instead of handling the problem himself, he received assistance from his disabled French teacher, Mr. Brunner. The author may have made Mr. Brunner disabled to represent the fact that people not originally perceived to be powerful, can be powerful. This may have been the initial instance for Percy to recognize his own potential. Also, after the pre-algebra teacher Percy’s friend, Grover, told him about the strange things Percy had been seeing.
