“The book was better than the movie”, is a statement almost anyone who has seen a book adaptation has said some point in their lives. Rick Riordan is a children’s book author, who writes books about mythologies. Such as Greek, Egyptian, and Roman. Just to name a few. His idea was to teach kids that their disabilities weren’t weaknesses, but hidden strengths. When the “Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief” was first announced many fans were excited to see their favorite heroes up on the big screen. Many thought it would end up a big success like the “Harry Potter” movies. Fans were completely disappointed and displeased with the outcome of the movie because it did not follow the book they adored. The sarcastic, ironic, witty and funny tones of the book make it what it is. The movie, on the other hand, drained the tones into something less of what it was supposed to be. The tones of the movie were mostly just to be humorous and animated. The book had clever titles that caught their readers off guard. These titles include things such as “I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom,” “The Old Ladies That Knit the Socks of Death,” and “We get Advice from a Poodle.” Percy Jackson sets up a big statement, only to then turn it around and confuse the reader with something ironic and or witty. Percy Jackson in the book also doesn’t act like a typical Greek hero would in a sense that he doesn’t make a big deal out of something that would be considered dangerous or fascinating to anyone else. In one scene from the book, he finds out his Latin teacher is a centaur, but instead of freaking out he casually goes on a tour of the camp. Making sure not to walk behind his teacher. In the movie, the main character does the opposite of his book counterpart. He overreacts then tries to hard to play things off as a funny or a too serious moment. Since most of the story wasn’t included in the book the movie had no real chance to portray many tones. In the book, the story revolves around a quest where the main character and his two friends have to leave the safety of the camp in search for Zeus's missing lightning bolt. On their journey, they find a way to save the main characters mother, but fail to save her. In the movie, the main character sneaks away from the camp with his two friends in order to find three pearls, that help them leave the underworld, to save the main character’s mother and by chance, they find the missing lightning bolt. In the end, the main character’s best friend gets left behind and the mother is saved. In the book, many of the characters accomplished side quests as they were on their way to completing the main quest. This was a reflection on the story of Odysseus who went on many dangerous and random adventures before completing his true objective. The movie only took three of the many quests that were in the book and made them into quest were they had to go to do their main goal.
