Pericles Funeral Oration was a speech given by Pericles at the end of the first Peloponnesian war. The funeral Oration was written to honor the lives of the fallen Athenian heroes. According to Thucydides, "Most of my predecessors in this place have commended him who made this speech part of the law, telling us that it is well that it should be delivered at the burial of those who fall in battle. For myself, I should have thought that the worth which had displayed itself would be sufficiently rewarded by honors also known as deeds; such as you now see in this funeral prepared at the people's cost." Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The bombing killed more than 2,300 Americans, sank ships, and destroyed aircrafts. The attack of Japan took America by surprise. On December 8th, 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt gave the "Day of Infamy" speech which announced that the U.S. would declare war on Japan. "The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu." With this quote President Roosevelt is confirming that Pearl Harbor has been attacked by Japan. "As commander in chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us." This is president Roosevelts way of insuring the nation that he is aware of the situation and he is doing everything he can to make sure that America is being defended. "No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory." He also says, " With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph—so help us God."
