In the history of the ancient Greek civilization, there were many powerful and contributing men and women, but only one could be called the “Greatest Greek”. That man’s name is Pericles. Pericles, an intelligent and powerful leader in the city of Athens, derives from a very wealthy, high ranked, and successful family. Due to his wealth, Pericles received the best education possible and used it for arts, which made him popular in Athens. While pursuing his career in politics, Pericles took on a powerful council of leaders called the Areopagus. With his friends, he plundered their power which led him to become the general of the Athenian army. During his time as the general, Pericles had three goals for Athens: strengthen the democracy; protection; glorify it. That allowed many who were not wealthy to take office in the government to participate. This extended not only in theory, but in reality, the governance of Athens to all its citizens. It would include all people, regardless of their financial/social situation, as long as they have the desire to serve. This original governance would serve to others as a model of a successful form of government. Everybody in the government had great respect for every decision and feelings toward the winners or losers. Pericles involved everybody in his system which made him well favored and also gave him power to achieve things that no person could have possibly dreamed
