This book was very graphic and went into detail about Kristina being raped. It was difficult to read this portion of the book and some teens may feel uncomfortable with it. I admit that I am vehemently anti-drugs and although I agree wholeheartedly that there should be more education about what is out there, at points it felt like the more pleasurable parts of taking drugs was focused on” (Reads.)
but that just like movies parental guidance is suggested so it makes sense that it should be banned but not for someone older who wouldn’t get distracted from the overall message. Child molestation is another reason this book was banned. Jeannette Walls talks about living with different relatives of the family and one of them attempting to do stuff with her and another time trying to do stuff with her little brother. It is made clear in the book that this wasn’t acceptable behavior on the adults part so I understand and agree that it isn’t for those younger than the age of sixteen.
Although some might say that certain situations with this book are crude and inappropriate they are very supportive towards the books context and how the reader interprets certain situations. Stephen Chbosky uses the title The Perks of Being a Wallflower to display irony, because Charlies life while being excluded by society has everything but good moments in them. After the party where he was dared to kiss the prettiest girl in the room and Charlie didn't choose his girlfriend, Charlie’s friends stopped talking to him. Charlies already poor mental health became worse when he was alone. In a letter on pg 144, about the aftermath of that incident he wrote, “ I don’t know how much longer I can keep going without a friend. I use to be able to do it very easily, but that was before I knew what having a friend is like.”
People might not want such a young age group to read it because it is not appropriate for the age group. It exposes the teens to drugs that they shouldn’t be doing. Many of the people in the book smoke, and it might encourage these 8th graders to also smoke to look “tuff”. There are also some violent parts of the book, and it uses some bad language. It is violent in the first chapter when the socs jump Ponyboy for walking home by himself.
