The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a book that can be categorized as young adult fiction, epistolary novel, and bildungsroman. It is classified as a young adult novel because of instances like Charlie trying to find his true identity, alcohol and drugs as an agent to cope with stress of growing up, parents that are distant from their children, a mentor to look up to that is not a parent, drama, issues of one’s sexuality/ sexual confusion, and most of all, depressive thoughts. It is, also, an epistolary novel since it is a novel told through the medium of letters written by one or more of the characters (Britannica Encyclopedia 2016), Charlie is the one who writes letters or should I say the book revolves around on his point of view while telling his story through a series of letters. Being mature is difficult to achieved especially if you have been hindering yourself from participating in this world. Chbosky might have want people to realize that we are not the only ones living in this world. Because of the fact that we want to make everything go with what we had planned we might have stepped on other people achieving what we want. In cases like Charlie’s grandfather scolding his daughters, Charlie’s mom and Aunt Helen, about their grades, this shows what I’ve been talking about. I know it is a father worrying for the future of his daughters but at least give them some freedom to be creative with their lives. Aunt Helen being abused by many men. She’s finding love and acceptance from someone but unfortunately, she’s not getting the love she deserves and because of that, it had been the root cause why he had molested Charlie. Every choice, and action we take, there will be always other people affected.
