In every novel around the globe you can find carefully constructed paragraphs, written by the author to send a specific message to the readers. In The catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, one particular section overflows with symbolism, metaphors, and hidden messages. By analyzing the passage’s diction, setting, and selection of detail it is possible discern the less overt statements hidden in the text and reveal the turbulent nature of the main character, Holden Caulfield. The diction of this passage appears to be the key in unraveling Holden’s mood swings.
There are many moments where uneasiness and tension builds without the use of sound. For example, the ending shots of the film are very quiet as Paul reaches out to touch the butterfly. When Paul is intercut with shots of the sniper, tension builds as the audience begins to fear what is coming. After Paul dies, the audience sees the beauty of the world and the horror of the world in the same shot: Paul’s arm, and a beautiful butterfly.
J.D. Salinger uses varying diction and syntax in “The Catcher in the Rye” to create mood and tone throughout the novel. The specific choice of words (diction) that the author uses contributes to the characterization of Holden Caulfield. The use of profane and jargon-like word choice encapsulates the voice of the teenage narrator Holden. Holden’s informal diction emphasizes his immaturity and allows the reader to learn more about Holden’s character. Holden often uses the word “and” in a repetitive manner which gives the reader a child-like impression of Holden.
Throughout the novel Flight, written by Alexie Sherman, the protagonist, notably known as “Zits,” displays an obscene amount of vulgar language. The use of his patois that is now commonly used amongst the vast majority of teens around the world is one worth explaining. To start, vulgar language is essentially looked down upon because of how profane and “unnecessary” it is. The use of this language in everyday life, not only within this novel, is one that is used to convey emotion, as it is much easier to swear and curse than it is to convey your emotions with “proper” language.
“My skin color was an asset for any move I was educated to want to make”(Mcintosh 1). A quote from Peggy McIntosh’s essay shows how the way we are treated in our societies has a direct impact on the way we perform in that society. The essay caused me to think deeply about myself and how I truly am privileged to be white; although we may not notice it there are millions of privileges linked to our skin colour. Upon finishing the reading I was questioning not only white privilege but also things like racism and what I myself could do to help people of other ethnicity’s not feel underprivileged. Sound is being used to create or sense the mood for the audience. For example, when Kim’s father is outside, diegetic sound is used so the characters hear the baseball game playing in the background which makes the situation exciting for the audience. Edward finishes trimming a bush (the dinosaur) and everyone is amazed. This can appear to create a dramatic and happy effect for the audience. The sound then crescendos to make it seem as if Edward is being cheered on by the crowd.
The House on Mango Street Message Not many of us can say that we have lived up to the expectations given to us and internally benefited from it. In the book The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza struggles with growing up with many expectations placed on her. She lives in a Latino neighborhood in Chicago with many neighbors who teach her important lessons. Overall, the story has a message that you should not rely on expectations and the author shows it by using the characterization of Esperanza and through figurative language.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a Fascinating Book and Movie “So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.” (2). The book, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, written by Stephen Chbosky, has a very bumpy storyline featuring a teenager named Charlie. Charlie starts out his freshman year with no friends, but he eventually he meets Sam and Patrick, two seniors at his school.
The film, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, follows the story of Charlie as he braves through the challenges of freshman year. Throughout his first year, Charlies experiences friendship, alienation, love, mistakes, depression, acceptance of past events and newfound motivation. With the help of his love interest Sam, her stepbrother Patrick, and other likeminded individuals, Charlie is able to gain a sense of belonging and a boost of confidence that ensures his survival for the high school years yet to come (Halfon, Chbosky, 2012). This essay will delve into an in-depth analysis of adolescence from a socio-cultural perspective, using events from the film to provide examples and further enhance arguments. Furthermore, topics highlighting what I believe to be the most crucial aspects of adolescence will be discussed.
1. The Perks of being a Wallflower is a story about a high school freshman named Charlie. Through the entire novel Charlie is writing letters addressed to an anonymous friend. In these letters, he talks about his journey throughout his first year in high school. Where he experiences everything for the first time – first dates, family drama, drugs and new friends. In other words; growing up.
He sees things. He keeps quiet. He understands. The Perks of Being a Wallflower’s main character Charlie, is a wallflower: reserved, isolated, and observant. Like a fly on the wall, he stays in the background, and goes unnoticed by many.
