The Negative Impact of Inequality in Iran
In the novel Persepolis, the author Marjane Satrapi discussed the many ways women were mistreated and oppressed in the country of Iran. The author showed the mistreatment women faced during the transition of power in Iran by using examples of the different ways women conformed to the new laws of the nation. However, the laws constructed for the women to abide by were a lot more inapplicable and complex, compared to the laws created for the men to abide by. In Iran, because women had to conform to the laws more strictly than men, this further demonstrated the inequality that women faced on a daily basis after Iran became a country of war. However, gender inequality was not the only type of inequality that women in Iran had to experience either. Marjane started to develop a deep sense of guilt for the men of the impoverished areas of society when she became informed that they were being manipulated into joining the war. For example, when a friend of Marjane’s mother came over to their home one day to explain to them about how her son decided to join the war so that he could experience the wonders of the afterlife, Marjane had a deep frown set on her face within the illustration (Satrapi, 99). The frown on Marjane's face represented the guilt that she was experiencing as a female of the upper class. Marjane felt guilty for being a female of the upper class because she did not have to deal with the hardships that those of lower economic status were dealing with. For instance, Marjane didn’t have to worry about being antagonised everyday by the military of Iran like boys her age did, and for this very reason, she once again felt guilty and ashamed for being apart of the privileged end of
