Perseus And The Olympians: The Lighting Thief

When looking at the Greek hero Perseus and his story, while also looking at the movie Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lighting Thief 1, you find some very noticeable differences between the two characters. Although Percy Jackson is simply named after Perseus, their stories share many uncanny similarities, with some very distinct differences. The distinctive differences between the Greek hero Perseus, and Percy Jackson are the way they killed medusa, who their Olympian fathers are, and the monsters they fought. One of the listed differences between Perseus and Percy, are how these characters killed medusa. Many could argue this is the biggest deviation from the original myth of Perseus the Greek hero.

The princess Danae hid Perseus, but her father found out and had them both locked in a chest and thrown out to sea, which directly caused Perseus’ famous quest of eventually killing Medusa. A very distinct difference to Perseus having the god Zeus as his fathers, Percy Jackson has different Gods of the big three as his father, Poseidon. In the movie, at 1:33:45, the character Chiron confirms that Poseidon is Percy Jacksons father. A large part of Percy’s character in this movie is that he can control water, granted to him by his dad. For instance, at the capture the flag scene, Percy heals his wounds and gains strength after touching the water, causing him to win the fight. Another instance is when he is fighting the hydra, he uses a water wall to deflect the fire. Additionally, in the final fight with Luke, Percy controls the water to assist him in winning this battle. Without having these powers from his father, he would not have completed his quest. This is a very noticeable variation to the Greek hero Perseus, because he had a different father, and he never used his father’s powers to assist him on his quests.
