Thematic Analysis In Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” the theme of perseverance appears several times throughout the story. The man had not been following some of the rules, even at the start but he never really wanted to give up. Just like how he had to start those three fires, he was determined to do it and that shows perseverance. Even though the man was quite foolish at some parts, he did show incredible perseverance even at his worst times. As the story goes on, you can see how the man basically faces the potential loss of his fingers, toes, even parts of his face. He reacts calmly to all of these situations. He is not concerned about the coldness or the lack of sunlight, because he is used to it. He is not worried whatsoever about what this extreme temperature could do to his body. The man is headed for a mining camp, where some of his friends are. Traveling alongside the man is his wolf-dog. There are nine hours of hiking ahead of the man, but that won’t stop him. The man’s dog breaks through this frozen creek and gets its legs wet, so the man now has to start a fire. After a while walking, the man himself breaks through this frozen creek, so he has to build another fire. After a little while longer, the man thinks about what the old man from Sulphur Creek, and how he warned the man that traveling alone in Yukon is very dangerous. The man doesn’t think much of it, he calls the old man “woman-ish” and thinks he just can’t handle the weather. The man then gets another fire going but made the mistake of putting it under a tree. As he tries to build another fire, its gets extremely more difficult because the man’s fingers are very numb. The man then gets a brilliant idea of killing his dog, so he can get inside of it to stay warm. That idea doesn’t last long, because the man barely has any use of his hands. The man then goes to sleep, but then dies in his sleep. The dog runs off, to the
