Perseverance is Key Between the passages of the short story, “Rogue Wave” written by Theodore Taylor, the author establishes the theme of the story as never give up when things go wrong because when you give up hope the smallest opportunities of success is lost. The author demonstrates the theme when Sully tries to save Scoot, “Over the next five or six minutes Sully dove repeatedly using his foot as a fulcrum, and using all the strength he had in his arms, legs, and back in an effort to open the doors” (Taylor 8).
