Perseverance is shown in the nonfiction stories, A Book Writing Venture by Kim Yong Ik, The Pioneer Women by Fabiola Cabeza de Baca, and They Called Her Moses by Ann Petry. In A Book Writing Venture, Kim Yong Ik wished to write and publish a fiction book in his third language. In The Pioneer Women, Dona Estefana Delgado de Baca traveled hundreds of miles by foot to save her village from a smallpox outbreak. In They Called Her Moses, Harriet Tubman risked her life and traveled extraordinary distances in order to free many slaves. Each of these stories' protagonists faced many challenges such as having nearly impossible odds against them, traveling great distances, and risking their lives, yet all of them persisted and succeeded in the end. The village that the Pioneer Women and others lived in was extremely remote, so the people living there had to be very independent and capable on their own. Baca explained, “The women had to be versed in the curative powers of plants and in midwifery” (404). The villagers could not rely on anyone else for help because “there were no doctors for two hundred miles or more.” This was until many outbreaks of smallpox infected the village. This required a hero to travel the great length and retrieve a vaccine from the rest of civilization. “She secured the vaccine from her cousin, Doctor Samaniego,” Baca stated. “She vaccinated her children, grandchildren and godchildren against the disease” (405). The brave and heroic person who saved the village was Dona Estafana Delgado de Baca, also known as the Pioneer Women. The author demonstrated perseverance through the difficulties that the Llano women faced as well as the heroic actions of the Pioneer
