An employment plan that rewards employees for acquiring skills, knowledge or competencies which are related to the job, is defined as person-focused pay (Martocchio, 2013, pg100). According to Martocchio (2013) text, person-focused pay can provide both employees and employers an advantage over those who are paid with a traditional pay system (Pg111). It is also clearly stated that the advantages are not supported by proof other than those determined by case studies (Martocchio, 2013, Pg111). The next few paragraphs will discuss person_focused pay plan advantages, if they were implemented at Mitron. Mitron technicians build custom personal computers for several office supply chains. The technicians ability to build the custom computers has built Mitron’s reputation of providing efficient customer services. Consequently, not all of the technicians at Mitron possess the skills to complete multiple steps in building the custom computers. Since Mitron technicians work in teams, projects are sometimes delayed with completion when a multiple skilled employee is absent from a team. Technicians are paid both hourly wages and team based bonus pay. Technicians are not motivated to acquire an additional skill as they will be paid anyway, once the custom personal computer task is complete.
