I often wonder when people talk of healthcare disparities, if they can ever truly understand what it means, and even what an underdeveloped nation looks like. I was born and raised in the Pakistan, a place where most people are suffering from conditions that are highly preventable. It is among one of the three countries in the world where poliomyelitis is still endemic. Even while working as an internal medicine resident in US I encounter people with debilitating yet preventable diseases on daily basis. It is my personal and professional goal to contribute to research that improves the health of populations in resource-challenged communities around the world. Understanding the diseases, their patterns, strengths, and weaknesses, is the foundation to create change. My aim is to understand both chronic and infectious diseases in order to help people avoid these debilitating conditions. I hope to be able to apply the knowledge of health education, communication, and prevention in the clinical practice. My …show more content…

Although the experience was troubling and demanded superhuman endurance, it gave me an insight into some of the most delicate issues concerning human life. The entire experience reinforced the importance of preventive medicine and the need to come up with new therapeutic strategies to deal with such catastrophic illness. All of this could have been avoided with better education and preventive procedures. It brought my attention to the importance of public health and the great opportunities that it offers to solve health problems. It was clear to me that most of the health care challenges faced by this population can easily be solved by well designed public health programs. I believe this is a field that will be crucial and beneficial to the society for now and
