Success is Earned Everyone has that one thing in life that they relentlessly work towards. For me, that thing is sports. There is always room for improvement in sports, but this improvement does not happen by itself. The sport that I most diligently work towards is hockey. I have played hockey since I was a little kid, and it is a passion of mine that will not soon fade away. Last year was my first year as a member of the Alpena Varsity Hockey team, and it was the most preparation I have ever done for something. The feeling as I am skating on the cold, crisp ice while air rushes past my face is like no other. Whether it is outside the rink, in practice, or in games, I am always trying to better myself. It all starts outside of the rink. Either at home or at the gym, there is always work to be done. I lift and squat until my legs burn and a fatigued sensation tingles throughout my body. Sweat drips off my forehead as weights clang off the ground in a heap. This is when you know you have accomplished something. I skate drill after drill, make pass after pass, and shoot puck after puck. I look over at my teammates while doing a particularly difficult skating drill. As I can only assume mine looks the same, their faces are a pale white in exhaustion, stomachs churning at the thought of the whistle blowing once again. But this is what it takes. This is what it takes to become a better player. I skate of the ice with this thought in mind, and can’t help but feel satisfied with what was accomplished with the day. All the work off this ice and on the ice has led the the most important day of the week.
