Upon the shocking catastrophe that struck parts of my country in 2004, I started to ponder the cause of the Tsunami that brought the enormous fatality of over 2 million people. This tragedy boosted my desire to understand how the subduction of the earth’s crust leads to the formation of a megathrust earthquake beneath the sea. I never realised my interest in the earth’s natural resources was so profound until the day I met a young geoscientist in a Science Conference. He opened my heart to geology, a world of mysteries when he showed me various samples of rocks and extracted oil he found during his expedition. My interest later bloomed as I joined a camp in Perak, which is well-known for its 400 million year old limestone caves. The most interesting part was the plate tectonic which can be explained through the concept of physics that I learnt; the thermal energy convection underneath us. Without any basics in geology, it was very challenging to understand various terminology used such as asthenosphere and catastrophism. However, with a strong foundation in physics and chemistry, I was able to comprehend the processes and mechanisms of our planet. Through Physics, I developed my ability to record data in a scientific manner while engaging with real-life problems. Chemistry provides me with the basis of laboratory skills when dealing with chemicals and the knowledge of green chemistry that highlights the importance of minimising harm to our planet and humanity. This would be vital for geologists in the O&G industry to manage and tackle environmental issues associated with both up and down-stream activities
