Personal Ethnography: My Personal Experience With Abortion

I have decided to blog about my personal experience with abortion. Abortion is a huge controversial issue globally in so many aspects of this sociology class, not only in today’s world but for decades. My personal experience effected my phycological and social self in many ways. Both bad and good.

I was 30 years old, single, and 8 months into buying my first home, I found out I was pregnant. I was having promiscuous sex with 2 different men, who I had no desire to share a child with. After days of soul searching and deciding what was important to me, I made the most difficult mental and physical decision of my life and that was to have an abortion.

Only a handful of my girlfriends and 1 family member knew about my current state of being, and those few did know my decision. I called immediately to schedule the appointment with a recommendation from my local Planned Parenthood office. I had my appointment set within, 10 days and a girlfriend committed to taking me. The day came quickly, I don’t remember the exact date, but I do remember the protesters. The poster board signs, telling women we were baby killers. The cut-out pictures of aborted fetus, I just covered my face and put my head in between my legs. Physically feeling great but mentally still processing what I had just done to my own child. In walks my female doctor, who I had been going to for 3+ years. She reads my chart and realizes why I’m there, she tells me, we need to get you on some other type of birth control other than this method. It took me a minute to process what she had just said to me. Judging me for a decision I made for my best physical, mental, family and financial situation. I didn’t cry until I reached the car. It was a pleasure, not every going back to that women for my health care
