Leadership role has been in practice for centuries but there is no exact definition to completely describe leadership. We think anyone who commands a group is a leader, but true leadership is the ability to learn from mistakes and guide people. Some of the lessons that have been most valuable to me was during my experience in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps Blazer Battalion. As a result of this experience I have learned to put the needs of others before mine without expecting anything in return. Being a second-year cadet who barely spoke to anyone, I was surprised to be chosen for a course consisting of mostly upperclassmen. Alongside being a member of the Blazer battalion staff I was also a member of the JROTC Drill Team. My Army JROTC Drill Team of Ridge View competed against other Army JROTC programs in the region. As a team, striving for success in whatever we do is the number one goal. When the 2013-2014 Drill Team season started my school did not place in most of the activities. When my team drill team was lopsided, the easiest thing to do was give up, but as a team leader I learned that quitting was just declaring prematurity, and I realized that I must step up so I would be able to lead my team to victory by encouraging them to practice harder than usual. Competing on a team that does not always win has taught me the values of self-discipline, selflessness, determination, teamwork, and hard work. Persevering through hard losses gave my team the strength to practice harder and give everything they had during competitions. The determination to work harder translated into more wins. Each time my team won in more activities at competitions we were happier with our success, and the urge to win more trophies grew stronger. Winning most of the meets increased my confidence and self-esteem as a leader and also as an individual. By the end of the drill team season, I was surpassing my goals as a team leader.
