Gender roles are rapidly developing during this time period in one’s life; already having a sense of self identification, childhood is the most vulnerable stage for stereotypes to adapt, gender-typed behavior patterns to develop and gender appropriate activities to begin to come into play (Sigelman, 372). When applying gender roles to myself, I thought about how gender roles shaped myself as well as my friends. Factors such as culture, hobbies, peers, family and social structure setting all played a part in molding me into the person who i was and who i became today. Gender roles is often a topic that receives little attention and is one that is not frequently discussed in a public setting. Without even knowing it gender roles impacted me from a very young age. My mother would always dress me in pink my interests and hobbies including dressing up, playing with barbies, learning to cook and do household chores. I think that as a society we should now be culturally evolved enough to not necessarily do this to our children rather let them make their own decisions in helping them develop their own identity. Through the theories we have read and discussed, the articles and studies we have learned and talked about in class and through the text, we see just how big of an impact gender roles play on individuals. By recognizing the flaws in gender roles, we can create a new norm for society to abide by, one that allows children the freedom to make their own decisions to not only create their own identity but also allow them to reach potential goals never attainable before
