A Day at Riverwood Pet Hospital I had the opportunity to participate in a preceptorship at Riverwoods Pet Hospital. Through this job shadow, I was able to see a glimpse into the world of veterinary technicians and experience some of the day to day activities they have.
The Riverwoods Pet Hospital offers the service of boarding animals, so my day started out with preparing kennels for the dogs and birds. Owners are welcome to bring in their own pet food so we filled up their bowls before we brought them back from inside. One client had packed carrots for their Boston terrier. I learned that carrots are a healthy treat for dogs that provide vitamin A as well as help clean their teeth. Luna, a four-month-old pit-bull mix had gone missing for a day, and when she returned home, she was unable to put weight on her left hind leg. Both the patient and the client were very nervous because neither of them had many experiences in the clinic. After getting a TPR on Luna, Doctor Dobson requested some radiographs on Luna’s hind legs. She also had the client sign a sedation release form to allow us to sedate Luna while the x-rays were being taken. We gave her Diazepam for sedation because it is easily reversed. The x-rays showed a spiral fracture of the right hind leg and some damage to the left leg. We kept her sedated and put her back in her cage. After a little bit, she became unresponsive and her heart rate was slow. We brought in the oxygen machine just in case and reversed her sedation. After a few minutes, Luna became responsive again.
My experience at Riverwoods Pet Hospital was a positive one. Even though the day was not as busy as others, it was still a fast-paced environment with plenty of things to learn and to
