Personal Narrative: A Short Story

I was working on the second floor of a building when two elderly Habitat for Humanity directors fell off the roof, along with a few heavy wooden roofing boards that hit two women working on the ground. I rushed down the wooden stairs upon witnessing the event and called an ambulance that told me it would be fifteen minutes before help would arrive. The feeling of panic ensued when I realized that I had to keep four people alive until the EMTs came. That panic then turned into action triggered by a series of memories from Boy Scouts; I could suddenly recall everything I’d learned about how to treat life-threatening injuries. Moments like these are not rare for me because I’m usually the person who steps up and takes charge of a situation, a person who is used to doing amazing things. It’s a skill I naturally had but my parents helped me refine. Being the child of two Coast Guard officers allowed me to grow in a way others would not see as normal. I was born with two genetic diseases that doctors say should have killed me, yet somehow I survived. My father went active duty after September eleventh, which caused my family to move seven times in the span of five years. We ended up moving to Winchester where, even now, I’m the only black person in nearly all of my classes, and my extended family lives a thousand miles away. Despite all of these obstacles, I have been able to rise in my class , discover myself in a new light, and surpass my own
