I look around my room, on one corner of my desk, there is a framed picture of a smiling Asian family that is hidden behind textbooks and the Scarlet Letter. SAT material is scattered on the floor. On the wall is Chinese brush painting and a poster of The Eagles.
Am I Chinese or American?
I have known frustrating moments of miscommunication, the nostalgia for a place where fitting in was never an issue, and the tug between the Chinese and American tables in the cafeteria.
I always feel out of place at JFK airport. I hold a Chinese passport, love dim sum, and know the profound Chinese culture. But I also savor Mac’’n Cheese and know American music. In my mind, I do not want to wear a label.
