Katniss Everdeen, Luke Skywalker, and Tris Prior were teenagers when they first met their mentors; I, however, was born knowing mine. Since I was born, my mother has been my mentor. I’ve never thought of her as a mentor until now, but reflecting back upon my life I can see how she’s shaped my journey. I’m not a hero; I’m no Katniss or Batman. I’ve never had to overcome adversity or challenge the government. I have, however, had to journey through life’s challenges of making friends, getting through school, and loosing loved ones. Throughout my journey to Pepperdine, my mom has been my mentor, my biggest supporter and cheerleader. My mom has never once given up on me. She told me to be my own person and leader, not to be someone I’m not. She encouraged me to stay true to myself by building my own style and being unique. Her gift was not only that, but to also be kind to everyone, as what comes around goes around. She was kind to everyone and she always said “don’t you want a lot of people to come to your funeral?” I’ve taken these gifts with me to college as I embark on a new journey. I’m not trying to be someone I’m not; I’m not pretending to be a surfer or sorority girl, or overly sporty and adventurous – I’m just being me, and people can either like me for it or they can leave. Her gifts have impacted and shaped my life more than she knows, and it’s because of her that I know who I am and what I want in life. My mentor continues to remain with me because she’s my mom. She’s encouraged me to move ahead independently, but she’s told me that it’s okay to not be okay. She’s encouraged me to try to navigate life by myself, but to call her if I ever need anything, as she’s just one plane ride away. Pepperdine is a new world, but if I ever fall, my mom’s going to be there to catch
