When the only person close to you in age is your older sister, any additions to the family is incredibly exciting. Growing up, I was surrounded by adults as the next youngest person (excluding my sister) was fifteen years older than me. I would sit with the adults at the large table in my grandmother's front room and not understand anything they were talking about. Once my cousins got older, they began to have children. As I wasn't around many small children at a young age, suddenly having nine baby cousins by the time I was sixteen was incredibly interesting. They were fun to play with and watch. One day I was watching some of the kids play and noticed that the four year old twin boys had completely different personalities. One was very outgoing, and the other shy and quiet. Watching the other kids, I could see that despite spending every day with each other, everyone of my baby cousins was a different person. We were beginning our development unit, and being able to see a topic we studied right in front of my own eyes was mesmerizing. It immediately piqued my interest even more than it already was, and I was able to connect some ideas we learned in class (like the stage of development) to a real life scenario. This gave me an incredible urge to learn more and research more. Sometimes it is hard to connect classwork with the real life, but it was a very exciting experience when I did.
