Over spring break, I had the opportunity to watch Bishop DuBourg high school track team practice. I showed up to the track to be greeted by some of the athletes on the distance team. I stood around talking to the guys for about 15 minutes before I asked where the coach was. No one had any idea. Once the coach came out, none of the athletes seemed to acknowledge him. It took a minute or two for him to get the attention of the athletes. Next, he explained the workout for the day. It was 10x200. Once the athletes finished asking questions about pace and arguing on the number, they were off to do their warmup. As the athletes warmed up, the coach just walked away. The coaches were a joke, there was no discipline, and the athletes seemed to run everything. If I were the coach of the team, there is only one aspect that I would keep the same. All the athletes had a lot of fun while they were at practice. I would want to make sure that my athletes had the same level of fun but were also working hard. If this were my team, I would have the entire track team meet at a central location. They are a team. I want them to get to know everyone. Then I would have each athlete meet with their coach. Next, I would make sure to not leave my athletes in the middle of practice. Even though they are just running, there are many things that could go wrong. Also, there are many little things that can be improved to assist the athletes. When I would give workouts, I would explain why we are doing it. I believe that athletes work harder when they know why they are doing certain things. Finally, I would add supplemental work. Too many times coaches and athletes in track just fall into the camp and think that the only way to get faster is to run. It also helps to get stronger and more flexible. I would add light lifting and hurdle mobility in addition to the running. This will give the athletes an extra advantage when they are running on the
