A query all educators are far too familiar with is: “How does this apply to the ‘real world’?” Skeptical over how comprehending derivatives renders subsequent affluence, most students would be unable to properly define this so-called ‘real world’, but instead look for a motive to circumvent their scholastic responsibilities. Now, I was no different. Amongst my enlightening high school experience, I have typically stumbled when miscellaneous subjects were to be connected. Similarly, every successful journey has its highs and lows. Departing victoriously entails perseverance and perspective during mournful hours. These were attributes I had been longing.
No two chordal progressions are to be interpreted identically. Comparably, no two humans are indistinguishable. I formerly juxtaposed myself to other classmates, unable to realize we are each exclusive.
And most importantly, unexpected intuition is the foundation of jazz. When lacking direction, when missing inspiration, remember to trust the heart. Teenage years are innately stressful, I needed to do what made me merry and jovial.
I proceeded, grasping the grammar and vocabulary of jazz. Duke Ellington and Chick Corea were commonplace in my household; improvisation soon became a lifestyle. Our ensemble went on to garner consecutive state titles, even having featured me as a soloist my junior year. By then, I had developed into a solicitous and assured young adult, ready to face the unknown. Self-doubt was nonexistent. While my jazz education produced a bebop expert, it was values and lessons acquired along the route that molded my character and
